Breaking the traditional front yard – back yard formula for suburban residences, a two story wing of this house extends towards the rear property line to embrace the rear yard as an outdoor room. The kitchen, the hub of family life, straddles the rear yard with large windows facing the raised lawn. Taking full advantage of the benign Southern California climate, a large glass door retracts to fully connect the indoor life of the kitchen to the outdoor life of the patio.
Concealed by a hedge of pittosporum, an assemblage of interlocking wood-clad boxlike forms create the entry and livingroom. Slits of glass connect the boxes allowing daylight to spill into the interior and provide turret-like views to the exterior.
